I love Milan! I've found it has an almost Marmite quality, people either love it or hate it. When I lived in Verona, I spent a lot of time there, breathing in the atmosphere. I've also been to The Cube - I found the surroundings were very impressive!

Thanks for this piece. It all needs pointing out, again and again - especially that UK consumers have the power to change welfare standards (and put farmers out of business via the big supermarket policies) by their choices at the till.

For balance: I've eaten in Sureny at least five times, and it's comfortably my favourite restaurant in Barcelona. It's possible it was having an off night when you were there, but it hasn't on my numerous visits. So it's more tempting to think that someone who can't appreciate or even understand the glorious union of pan-fried, caremalised foie gras and a zesty mango sauce, has an off pallate. Foie gras is, after all, commonly served with a sweet accompanying sauce, jam or chutney.

Having never had them I can't vouch for the scallops, and that sauce doesn't look good, but everything I have ever had there has been perfectly realised and on a par with the 1 michelin star food I've eaten.

Sorry to say this just seems like a hatchet job, rather than a measured review.

Président (Lactalis) products suck!
they are trying ot impose pasteurized Camembert and play a sad role againt French cheese diversity.
The worst part is that they pay French 3 star chefs to promote their products

It looks like :
-you might not be the most receptive type of customer for L'Ambroisie
-they might have had a bad day when you visited (no excuse for a 3 stars)
-you probably had both very high and very precise expectations on this restaurant.
in the end, it was a total mess!
I was probably more lucky than you: http://chrisoscope.com/2011/12/12/bernard-pacaud-a-lambroisie-magique/

Most parisian gastro restaurants are closed during the week end. Mostly because the majority of their clients is not in Paris (and also because the chef and staff want to be with their families). This is the case of l'Astrance.
L'Astrance is a very nice place that I enjoyed too.
I was ate foie gras, truffles, lobster, and other high end stuff: http://chrisoscope.com/2010/01/27/lastrance-paris/ Ok, there was no caviar...

Well that doesn't make much sense Alex, seeing as a) lager is just as much a type of beer as ale is, and b) CAMRA routinely serve and promote cider and perry, both of which are definitely not beers.

I also go to beer festivals to drink beer. The difference is that I'm not such a snob that I am not also interested in trying some independent locally brewed high quality lagers alongside the many other varieties of beer available.

interesting article and nice collection of food sites... I tend to use my own cook books and then refer to the web if I have some unusual ingredient I'm not sure what to do with... I find the BBC Good Food website surprisingly useful too... and of course you'd forgotten to mention the most excellent Belleau Kitchen... natch
